Druze: An Intriguing Ethnoreligious Group

Origins and Beliefs

The Druze are a fascinating ethnoreligious group with approximately one million adherents worldwide. Originating in the Middle East, they primarily reside in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. Their beliefs are a captivating blend of monotheism and esoteric doctrines, fostering a strong sense of unity and loyalty within the community.

Religious Practices and Identity

Druze practice a unique form of Islam that diverged from the mainstream religion in the 10th century. They observe certain Muslim rituals and practices, yet maintain distinct theological beliefs. Approximately 25% of Israeli Druze actively participate in religious services weekly, while a similar number engage in daily prayers. Despite these religious aspects, the Druze consider themselves an independent ethnic and religious group, distinct from both Muslims and Christians. They refer to themselves as "Mowahhid," which translates to "monotheist."
