Deadly Storm Outbreak Batters Region

At least five tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area Monday including an EF-1 tornado on the city's Near West Side as the region was battered by storms for a second night in a row.

The Weather Service said a tornado also touched down near Sugar Grove, Ill., about 40 miles west of Chicago. The agency's Chicago office said its staff had to take shelter as three tornadoes were simultaneously on the ground in the southwestern Chicago metro area around 8:30 p.m. Central time.

Two tornadoes were sighted by radar near Aurora, Ill., while another was confirmed near Naperville, Ill.

Tornadoes, dangerous straight-line winds and other hazards rocked the Chicago area for a second night in a row Monday. At least one person was killed during the storm outbreak.

At least 10 tornadoes were reported in the Chicago area Monday night, including two that were confirmed in the city.
