Deadly Tornadoes Tear Through Chicago Area
Over 200,000 Residents Without Power
Multiple Tornadoes Touch Down Monday Night
At least six tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area Monday night, leaving widespread damage and power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed an EF-1 tornado struck the city's Near West Side, causing significant damage to buildings and vehicles.
The NWS also reported a tornado touchdown near Sugar Grove, Illinois, about 40 miles west of Chicago. Around the same time, three separate tornadoes were spotted near the southwestern suburbs of Bolingbrook, Plainfield, and Romeoville.
The storms brought heavy rain and high winds, resulting in power outages for over 200,000 Chicago-area residents as of Tuesday morning. ComEd, the region's largest utility provider, reported that crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to multiple reports of downed trees, damaged buildings, and downed power lines. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or fatalities.
The NWS issued a tornado warning for the Chicago area at around 8:30 PM Monday night, urging residents to seek shelter. The warning remained in effect for several hours before it was lifted.
